Ogden Hinckely Airport Runway and Taxiway Construction and Upgrades

Project Owner: City of Ogden

General Contractor: Geneva

Project Manager: Tony Altenes

Project Location: Ogden, Utah

Ogden-Hinckley Airport is Utah’s busiest municipal airport. More than 400 General Aviation airplanes call the facility home. In addition, an all-weather, 24-hour per day precision ILS approach capability gives the airport top credentials as an FAA Part 139 General Aviation airport, and a weather diversion alternative for Salt Lake International Airport. DC-9s, MD-80s and B-737/727 class aircraft regularly use the airport for cargo and charter operations. Corporate, general aviation and charter flights terminate only twenty miles from Snowbasin (home of the 2002 Winter Olympic downhill and giant slalom events), Powder Mountain and Wolf Mountain ski resorts. Ogden is also looking to the future, with the possibility of commercial airline service.

A big part of making this future a reality has involved several improvements to the facility. Starting in 2007, three separate projects have been undertaken to add to the capacity, usability and safety of the facility. Sorensen Companies Inc., (SCI), has been involved in all three projects and is proud to have partnered with two of the regions top General Contractors, Geneva Rock Products and Staker & Parsons Construction to make it all happen.

This project allowed us to mobilize both our underground excavation and horizontal directional driller experts and our electrical division. SCI was responsible for the construction and upgrading of the main electrical and lighting vaults for the facility. We also installed over 31,000 LF of 2” electrical conduit and electrical conductors for new runway and taxiway lighting. The conduit installation involved several different methods of construction including traditional open trenching, plowing and horizontal directional drilling. We also installed new illuminated guidance signs and a new E style REIL system.

This project is a great example of our ability to tackle a complex project and utilize several of our different divisions, to offer a complete solution for our customers.
